The Chicks Topic Book this week was The Hospital Dog by Julia Donaldson. This is a story of kindness, bravery and one very daring dog. All the children in Wallaby Ward feel better after a visit from Dot the hospital dog. And when a patient is in a peril, it’s down to Dot to save the day! We chose this book to celebrate our fundraising walk in aid of the Dogs Trust later in the week and to support our continued learning of the world around us and the people and animals that help us in our community.
To extend this learning the people who help us the children had a very exciting trip to the Fire Station where they were able to meet real life firefighters. They had great fun squirting water through the hoses. They were also able to go inside the fire engine and the fireman showed them all the equipment they need when sent out on an emergency.
On Thursday the children went on a Paw Patrol Stroll, to raise funds for Dogs Trust as well as celebrating the 10th anniversary of the animated series. The Chicks spotted the Paw Patrol characters that were hiding on the trees and next to the characters was a note with a challenge. For each character they met there was a different challenge. They ran on the stop, did star jumps, found 5 items that were green, got in their boats and sang “Row, row, row you boat” and finished off with building a house using natural materials. Everyone had lots of fun and the children all received a special sweet teat for all their hard work!
On Friday we had a special visitor from the Therapy Dogs, Florence and her owner Petrina.
Just like in the story Florence also visits the hospital and cheers up sick children and adults. The children were able to stroke Florence and asked questions such as "where does she sleep and where did you get him".
We look forward to another busy week after half term!
