Chicks News - 19th June 2026
The Chicks have had a fantastic week full of learning, exploration, creativity and preparation for Sports Day!
Our story this week was ‘Pete the Cat: Rocking Field Day’ by Kimberly and James Dean. The story explored the importance of trying your best, working together and celebrating each other's achievements.
Throughout the week, the children took part in a wide range of activities designed to develop their fine motor skills, including mark-making with flour, chalk, paintbrushes, crayons, paint sticks, and shaving foam, as well as threading beads, using scissors, exploring playdough and kinetic sand, and transferring coloured water with pipettes. These activities helped strengthen the Chicks' hand muscles, improve their hand–eye coordination, and support early writing development.
The children enjoyed lots of opportunities for imaginative and cooperative play. They explored farm animals, Peppa Pig characters, princesses and castles, construction vehicles, and our popular Vet's Surgery role-play area. Through these experiences, they developed their communication skills, creativity, empathy, sharing, turn-taking, and understanding of the world around them.
Construction and problem-solving featured heavily this week as the children built with Duplo, wooden blocks, foam blocks, magnetic rods, Stickle Bricks, cogs, and puzzles. They showed excellent perseverance, teamwork, and creativity while designing, building, and rebuilding their creations.
In our Outdoor Learning Environment, the children enjoyed obstacle courses, climbing, riding tricycles and cars, water painting, washing construction vehicles, cooking in the mud kitchen, building sandcastles, observing worms in the wormery, and exploring insects trapped in ice. These activities encouraged physical development, curiosity, scientific thinking, and a growing interest in the natural world.
A major focus this week was preparing for Sports Day. The children practised races, obstacle courses, positional language and teamwork activities. They also decorated their Sports Day headbands with stamps and gems. Throughout these activities, the children demonstrated kindness, patience, determination, and excellent sportsmanship, always encouraging and cheering on their friends.
We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, confidence, and teamwork the Chicks have shown this week and we are looking forward to another busy week at 345 Wandsworth.
