Chicks News - 8th May 2026
This week the Chicks had a wonderful time learning through play, exploration, creativity, and teamwork. Our focus story was ‘The Nose, Toes and Tummy Book' by Sally Nicholls which inspired lots of activities about body parts and self-awareness.
Throughout the week, the children enjoyed a wide range of sensory and fine motor activities. They explored shaving foam, sand, water, playdough, paint sticks, and mark-making materials, helping to strengthen their hand muscles, coordination and creativity. The children also practised tracing, drawing and making patterns using crayons, whiteboard pens, rolling pins, pipettes, syringes and cutters.
Construction and problem-solving were particularly popular this week. The children worked together using large Duplo blocks, magnetic cubes and tiles, train tracks, foam bricks, Popoids, and puzzles. They built towers, bridges, garages, trucks and train tracks while developing teamwork, perseverance, communication and turn-taking skills.
Our role-play areas inspired lots of imaginative play this week and the Fire Station role-play encouraged the children to create rescue scenarios, answer pretend phone calls, and dress up in helmets.
In our Outdoor Learning Environment, the children stayed very busy exploring the climbing frame, pushing buggies, making sandcastles, washing ducks through the drainpipes, rolling balls, investigating dinosaurs and bugs, and searching the garden for natural materials. They especially loved discovering worms in the new bug hotel and helping to feed them fruit peel leftover from Snack Time.
During our focus sessions, the children explored body parts and facial features. In Maths, the children continued learning about size, comparing objects and identifying the biggest, smallest, and medium-sized items.
The children also enjoyed Music with Mr Alex, singing nursery rhymes and using instruments to explore rhythm and movement. During sports with Coach Pedro, they practised coordination, balance, running, tiptoeing, stretching and simple gymnastics movements.
We also enjoyed a special Cookery activity, making funny faces on rice cakes using soft cheese and vegetables such as cucumber, olives, and beetroot — they were delicious.
Well are looking forward for another adventures at 345 Nursery School Wandsworth.
