Fledglings News - 18th September 2026
The Fledglings Topic Story for this week was The Squirrels Who Squabbled by Rachel Wright, which continues focusing on building friendships, as well as promoting some of our Classroom Principles such as sharing, taking turns and using our kind hearts. These were the intention behind choosing the story as it offers a great example of how the two squirrels end up learning how to share by the end of the story.
During the week our Free Play activities supported the key themes of the book as well as taking into consideration the children’s interests.
For our Art Project the children turned a paper cup into a cheeky squirrel and we worked on it throughout the week. We began by painting the cup and then added the body parts which made everyone's squirrel unique. The children were encouraged to name their creature and as we worked on them we had lots of great discussion about the book as well as the habitats of these animals, their diet and discovered other fun facts about them.
We have set up our Role Play area as a Woodland, drawing on our knowledge of the children’s interest and love of animals and enabling them to develop their imagination skills as they build scenes and discover the props in their play. We introduced our Person of Interest, the amazing David Attenborough and throughout the week we read his life story and learned about the valuable work he has done for our Planet and particularly the woodlands of London.
On Wednesday we were joined by Mr Alex for our Music session, where the children learned new songs, developed rhythm and explored musical instruments. We also started practicing our songs for the Harvest Festival.
On Thursday we enjoyed a morning on the common with aim of observing how the trees have changed since last week and exploring how the changes of the weather affects them.
On Friday we had Sports with Coach Diego, where we continued to work on the children’s gross motor skills, hand eye coordination, strength and listening skills.
