Chicks News - 20th September 2024

The Chicks have had a very busy week at 345 Wandsworth. During the week we enjoyed exploring a variety of activities inspired by our Topic Story  ‘Want to Play Trucks?’ which is a beautiful picture book about two friends Jack and Alex. Jack likes trucks. Alex likes dolls. So, what will they play with together? At the end both boys found some compromise and found one thing which they both like, ice cream!

During Free Play we focused on developing our fine motor skills by experimenting with rolling, poking and cutting playdough. We also practised Practical Life activities such as, pouring sand from jug to jug and scooping and transferring a rock salt between two bowls. We also used tweezers to transfer pom-poms from bowl to bowl.

In the Messy tray we explored shaving foam and cars, insects hidden under the shredded paper and soil and diggers. To work on our PSED we used large foam blocks and Duplo blocks to build big towers and houses together. We practised sharing and taking turns when we played with the train set and Peppa Pig world.

Our Role Play Area has been set up as a Construction site and the Chicks have been busy building walls with the foam bricks and different tools. We even remembered to wear our safety helmets while we were on site.

This week the Orange and Purple Chicks continued to focus on learning our Classroom Principles which are ‘Kind Hearts’, ‘Walking Feet’, ‘Gentle Hands’, ‘Listening Ears’, and ‘Taking Turns’ and every day they did different activity related to one of them. We talked about what it means to have ‘Kind Hearts’ and during our collaborative art project we used glue sticks and pre-cut paper and felt to decorate a pre-cut heart.

We worked together painting with large paint brushes and used a sand timer for taking turns. While one of us was painting, our friend held a sand timer. When the sand ran out the children swapped places. We talked about what it means to have ‘Gentle Hands’ and to practise this we touched different fabrics and we described how they felt. We also practised our Gentle Hands by stroking a soft toy dog. We were so gentle with him and we even gave him some cuddles. We talked about why it is important to use our ‘Walking Feet’ in the Classroom and the children enjoyed demonstrating this as they walked through the paint and left footprints on the paper. Finally we played ‘Simon Says’ to practise our ‘Listening Ears’.

During Literacy Focus Time the Green and Pink Chicks spoke about their favourite toys and stuck a photo of their toy on the activity sheet. During Maths Focus time they used paper shapes to create an ice cream.

During our Outdoor Learning Day the Green and Pink Chicks went to  the  Common and looked for the first signs of Autumn. Back in the classroom, the Chicks enjoyed our Cookery  Sessions where we made fruit ice lollies. All the children were so good at cutting the different fruits and transferring them to the blender. Later we poured a smoothie to individual ice lollies trays. We can’t wait to eat them on Monday!

As the weather was so lovely this week the Chicks spent lots of time in the Outdoor Learning Environment. They worked on their balance going through an obstacle course, building sand castles in the sand pit and enjoyed a range of water play activities such as spraying a board with spray bottles and washing cars in the 345 Car Wash using large brushes. We also had fun popping bubbles and practising climbing onto the climbing frame and going down the slide .

We are looking forward to another busy week next week at 345 Wandsworth!
