The Chicks have had a very busy week at 345 Wandsworth and we have enjoyed exploring a variety of activities inspired by our Topic book The Frog Olympics by Brian Moses. This is a wonderfully funny and charming picture book about frogs coming together from around the world to participate in and celebrate their 'Frog Olympics.’
During Free Play we continued developing our fine motor skills by using our hands to roll the playdough into smaller sizes and we cut the play dough with plastic knives. We also used tweezers to pick up plastic insects from the bowl and we fed frogs with them.
In the Messy Tray we explored various materials including the wild animals with shredded paper and logs as well as water, lily pads and plastic frogs. On our Maths table we explored sequencing discs and we made patterns with 2D shapes and the Unifix to practise our counting.
To work on our PSED we used large foam blocks or Duplo blocks to build big towers and houses together. We practised sharing and taking turns when we played with the car truck and Peppa Pig world.
Our Role Play Area this week has been set up as a ‘Supermarket' and the children have been busy scanning different items, packing them onto the shopping trolley, and later to their bags. Role play activities help the children to develop their communication and language skills as they engage in conversations with each other and their teachers and it also supports the development of their social skills as they make friends and develop their imaginative play with each other.
During literacy Focus Time Orange and Purple Chicks used stickers to decorate frog headbands. They also enjoyed singing the song ‘Five Little Speckled Frogs’ and acting as frogs and one by one jumping into the 'pool'. They had so much fun that they wanted to sing this song over and over again.
In Art we embraced the children’s love of painting and designing and created beautiful frogs using stamps and later we decorated them using cotton buds and different colours of the paint. During our Cookery sessions the Chicks made delicious fruit smoothies. We worked together to cut all the fruit, and took it in turns to add them to the blender. We watched with big excitement on our faces as all the fruit mixed together and enjoyed drinking the smoothies during Snack Time.
During our Write Dance session with Miss Jackie the Orange, Green, Yellow and Purple Chicks jumped from spot to spot like little frogs. They also made lots of different movements on the table with their hands in the flour and made marks on paper using felt pens.
In the Outdoor Learning Environment the Chicks worked on their balance, challenging themselves on the obstacle course, building sand castles in the sand pit and we watched the cars going fast and slow down the drain pipe.
The Chicks highlight of the week however was definitely Sports Day! We were all very proud of the children for taking part in a variety of different races. The Green, Yellow, Orange and Purple Chicks had their Sports Day in the Outdoor Learning Environment and the Pink Chicks joined the Fledglings on the Common. All the children received a medal and an ice lolly at the end of the races.
Well done Chicks! We are looking forward to another busy week next week at 345 Wandsworth.
