The Chicks continued their learning about farms and farm animals with a visit to Deen City Farm this week. The children were very excited to travel on a big white coach, enjoying songs and conversations with their friends and teachers.
At the farm, the Chicks visited the small animals area, where they met the guinea pigs Taro and Dumbo, the ferrets Tyril and Bandit, and the rabbits Charlie and Autumn. Everyone practised using their ‘Gentle Hands’ to stroke the animals. The children noticed how soft the rabbits were and learnt that rabbits do not make sounds, whereas guinea pigs use different sounds depending on how they feel. The ferrets were very funny and energetic, climbing all over our guide, Maria.
After this, we met our second guide, Tom, and moved on to the big animals. We were introduced to Meg and Brie, the Shetland cows, as well as many goats and sheep. The Chicks loved feeding them and did a great job using their ‘listening ears’ to follow instructions on how to feed the animals safely with flat hands. A special moment was seeing a lamb being bottle-fed, as her mother was unable to feed her.
Once we said goodbye to the animals, we washed our hands and prepared for the walk back to the coach. We sang our Father’s Day songs and chatted about how much we had enjoyed the trip.
Back in our classroom, the children explored Practical Life activities such as transferring, which helped them refine their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They also built imaginative structures using Duplo, Stickle Bricks, wooden and castle blocks, and created stories around their designs.
During Focus Time, the children counted steps while following directions from our topic story 'What the Ladybird Heard' by Julia Donaldson. They also practised sounding out letters and identifying words with the same initial sounds. In Write Dance, the Chicks continued copying steering wheel movements, this time using shaving foam to make marks on the table.
The children had great fun with Coach Alex during their sports session. They practised kicking and throwing balls and enjoyed relay races in preparation for Sports Day.
We look forward to sharing more fun and learning with you at 345!
