The Fledglings have enjoyed a wonderful start to the second half of the Autumn Term and were delighted to share their holiday news with their peers. The wonderful pictures shared by the parents enables the children to provide detailed descriptions of their adventures, stimulates conversation and question asking and then as we record the children’s comments and drawings in their New Books it helps to develop their fine motor skills as they trace and draw.
We have been exploring two interesting Topic Stories this week, ‘My Diwali Light’ which looks at the celebration of Diwali through the eyes of a little girl as her family prepares and ‘Ava’s Poppy’ which follows a little girl as she watches a poppy flower growing in her garden. We used the story to introduce the children to Remembrance Day, why it is acknowledged and what the poppy flower symbolises. We wove the ideas from these stories into our free play and Focus Time activities and the Fledglings particularly enjoyed the art for each of the stories; they designed a poppy field using chalk and oil pastels and photographed their Loose Part Rangoli art.
We enjoyed a morning on the common exploring a new area for our Outdoor Learning Day and it was a great opportunity to extend our Rangoli art creations where we used natural items to explore the creation of symmetrical patterns which are used frequently in Rangolis. This activity combined both art and Focus Time skills we had practised earlier in the week and the children showed how well they had understood the tasks as we designed our nature Rangolis as a group.
The Fledglings were fascinated during our Outdoor Learning Day as they observed the changes in nature and spotted the differences in the leaves which had fallen, wanting to know why some look old and some still look new. This led to us discussing decomposition and we created a composting jar during our STEAM Focus activity to enable the children to observe these changes more closely.
We can’t wait for all the exciting events this half of the term will bring as we prepare for Christmas.
