This week the Chicks topic book was The Queen’s Knickers by Nicholas Allan in preparation for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations! In the story we find out that Queen is having a very busy year with lots of important events to attend. Meanwhile, a little girl is wondering what knickers her Majesty will choose to wear on a school visit! Will she choose to wear ‘at home’ knickers, adorned with corgis, or her ‘garden party’ knickers, or perhaps her woolly balmoral ones? The Chicks thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story and had great fun picking out the underpants that her majesty would wear if she happened to come and visit 345 nursery!
The story inspired our Art project this week where we had lots of fun painting a variety of the Queen’s knickers. The children used different coloured paints and sponges to paint their underpants and it was wonderful to see the different patterns that the children ended up creating. We had dotty pants, star pants, and stripy pants to name but a few!
This week, our role play area was transformed into Windsor castle, where the Queen entertained her guests. The Chicks loved dressing up for the occasion, pretending to be Queens, Kings, Princesses and Knights. This provided a great opportunity to ignite the children’s imagination as they engaged in many royal role-play scenarios.
The Chicks adore playing with anything messy and this week was no exception as the children made cups of tea and coffee for the Queen’s garden party. They had great fun pouring a range of liquids into china teacups, stirring in sugar and adding cream on the top. This activity sparked lots of great conversations about what drinks the children like and what they think the Queen would like to drink, ranging from baby cappuccinos to a simple a cup of tea.
One of the highlights of the week however was taking part in a Scavenger Hunt on the Common in aid of the charity Ella’s Home. The Scavenger Hunt was Mini Beast themed, and the children had to find and follow a range of different arrows to see where they would take us.
The children were all very good at spotting the arrows and their sense of direction was amazing, confidently telling the teachers which way to go. We finally arrived at a clearing and noticed pictures of mini beasts on the trees. We received a message from a ‘fairy’ who was very upset as she had lost all of her mini beasts. She asked us if we could help her find her pets, reminding us to be gentle and not to step on any of them. The Chicks searched high and low using magnifying glasses to help spot them. Finally, we found them! We found snails, ants, ladybirds, millipedes, daddy longlegs, ladybird lava and a greenfly!
On Friday we concluded our Jubilee celebrations a party. The Chicks made cucumber sandwiches for their snack and played party games which everyone enjoyed. However, the highlight of the morning was all the beautiful outfits the children came dressed up in for the party. We had princesses, knights, kings and even firefighters!
