The Chicks had a very busy week at 345 Wandsworth and Monday was particularly special because the Chicks had the opportunity to meet their new teachers during our Moving Up morning.

They had a lot of fun exploring the Fledglings side of the classroom and they enjoyed eating their snack there. The younger Chicks who are staying on the Chicks side for another year, spent time with Miss Sabine, playing together and listening to our Topic Story.

Our Topic Story for the week was ‘Find Your Happy‘ by Emily Coxhead, a beautifully illustrated book about feelings which helped introduce our learning this week. The book helped open up discussions around our feelings and we tried to recognise and name them during various activities. We also talked about what can help us when we are feeling angry, upset or worried. In the Messy Tray we explored various materials including shaving foam, water and sea creatures as well as sand and diggers, cups and spoons. We practised scooping and transferring, sharing and taking turns.

Wednesday was another special day because the Fledgling had their ‘Leavers Show’ so all the classroom was open and the Chicks and Fledgling played together. It was so nice to watch siblings playing together so nicely.

Our Role Play was set up as a Hotel for the week and the Chicks were busy answering the phones, taking bookings, checking people in and out and having lovely meals in the hotel restaurant. Role play activities help the children to develop their communication and language skills as they engage in conversations with each other and their teachers and also supports the development of their social skills as they make friends and develop their imaginative play with each other.

For our Outdoor Learning Walk the Orange and Purple Chick went to a shady area just outside our Nursery. They drank lots of water to keep cool and enjoyed listening to our Topic Story. Later they collected lots of sticks and leaves and worked on their counting skills. They also sang counting Nursery Rhymes.

In our Science Focus Time the Chicks took part in an experiment with water, strips of kitchen roll and markers. The began by using the markers to colour in their strip just in the middle. Next, they attached their strips to the edges of the bucket and put the bucket in the middle of the tray, which they filled with water. The Chicks were so excited to watch how their strips absorbed the water and how the water started to move the coloured part of the strip upwards. At the end of their morning they looked at them again and saw that the colours had moved even further up.

On the Art table the Chicks designed their own Superhero masks which they proudly wore on Friday, presenting them to their friends and teachers.

In the Outdoor Learning Environment the children practiced going through an obstacle course, going up the climbing frame and going down the slide safely. They also had fun riding cars and tricycles, exploring water and large pipettes and looking at their favourite books on the picnic blanket. We also had lots of different water play activities but the spray bottles and water pistols were the Chicks favourite.

We are looking forward to the last two days of Summer Term next week, especially our Summer Party on Tuesday!
