This week’s Topic Book was Elmer and Wilbur by David McKee for the Pink and Green Chicks. The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story of Elmer and Wilbur helping Rose find her herd.
In the story, Grandpa Eldo asks Elmer and Wilbur to help a young elephant find her way home. They are very surprised to discover that she is pink – no wonder she is called Rose! However, an even bigger surprise awaits them when they reach her herd, as every single elephant is pink too.
Throughout the week, the children created their own elephants by painting them using different colours and exploring a variety of textures.
During our maths activity, the children explored patterns by following a two-way pattern after observing the different patterns on the elephants. The children also enjoyed small world play, creating their own scenarios using the castle, princesses, firefighters, and emergency vehicles.
This week's Topic Story for the Orange and Purple Chicks was The Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle. The children loved finding out all about Blue the friendly truck. In the story we meet Blue, a friendly little pickup truck who travels along a muddy country road. Blue is always happy to help others, but when he gets stuck in the mud after helping a dump truck, he needs help himself. Luckily, along his journey Blue has made many farm animal friends, who work together to help get him back on the road.
The children continued their learning through lots of messy play, with a firm favourite being rescuing the vehicles that were stuck in the oobleck. They played together using the farm animals, learning the names and sounds of the different animals.
The children further developed their fine motor skills by squeezing, poking, and manipulating playdough. They also thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Montessori Practical Life activities, including pouring, spooning and using tweezers to transfer items. These activities helped to develop their fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination, preparing them for early writing.
