The Chicks Topic story this week was Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. Autumn has come and the wind is gusting, Leaf Man is on the move. Is he driving East, over the marsh and ducks and geese? Or his he heading West, above the orchards, prairie meadows, and spotted cows? No ones quite sure, but, this is certain; a Leaf Man’s got to go where the wind blows!!! This has been a great book to use as a springboard for conversations around the seasons and for the Chicks to discuss the changes they are seeing in the environment around them.
It has been lovely listening to all the Chicks stories about their Half Term holidays, including stories of visiting the Farm and the Pumpkin fields to choose a pumpkin for Halloween. This then sparked conversation about what outfits they would be wearing for trick and treat!
The children have had a very busy week learning about Autumn and all the Autumnal leaves that have been falling off the trees. Our topic book has allowed the children to use their imagination and during the week the children used leaves and loose parts to create their own Leaf Man pictures. They also enjoyed exploring the messy tray, searching for mini beasts hiding under the soil and the leaves.
The Role Play area was very popular this week where the children went on lots of journeys on their big red bus. They took turns to be the driver and once the children bought their tickets off they went! We went to France, the beach and the chocolate shop while singing “The Wheels on the Bus”.
On our Outdoor Learning Walk to the Common this week the children displayed good listening skills and stayed within the safety zone. Once we were settled, the children went inside the woodland area to explore and climb the trees. They throughly enjoyed climbing the trees and with some support from the teachers they were able to take risks and climb the big tree. We also looked for bugs that may have been hiding under logs or in the soil.
We continued to take inspiration from our topic book in Art where our project this week was leaf painting with paint. The children looked closely at the textures of the leave and came to the conclusion that painting the bumpy side of the leaf gave a better imprint.
In Literacy the Green Chicks focused on the AnimaPhonics letter sound ‘s’ where they had great fun using paint and string to draw a ‘s’. The Pink and Yellow Chicks concentrated on the letter sound ‘t’, tracing the letter and playing a sound game.
During our Maths activity the children sorted the leaves in to size order, sticking them onto their activity sheets.
It has been a very busy week at 345 and we are looking forward for another busy week next week!
