The Chicks have had a very busy week at 345 Wandsworth. This week was all about preparing for our Sports Day and we enjoyed exploring a variety of activities inspired by our two Topic Stories ‘Ready, Set, Go’ by Celeste Cortright for the Pink and Green Chicks and ‘Take A Leap, Sheep!’ by Tony Neal for the Purple and Orange Chicks.
In the Messy Tray we explored various materials including shaving foam and foam blocks, sand and spoon and pots, water and sea creatures. We practiced sharing and taking turns with our ‘Kind Hearts’ when we played with the garage and cars, train track, tunnels rockets and spaceships.
This week our Role Play Area was set up as a Baby Room. We were busy changing babies, nappies, feeding and putting them to sleep, making sure they were wrapped up nice and warm. Role play activities help the children to develop their communication and language skills as they engage in conversations with each other and their teachers and also supports the development of their social skills as they make friends and develop their imaginative play with each other.
For our Outdoor Learning Walk the Orange and Purple Chicks went to the Common. When we arrived we enjoyed a snack while listening to our Topic Story. After we finished the teachers set up an obstacle course and the children worked on their Gross Motor Skills and listening skills by following the instructions to complete it.
During our Write Dance Lesson the children used their leg muscles and pretended to climb up the stairs and jump as high as Big Ben, while listening to the song ‘Staircase’.
During our Cookery Session we made energy balls, using oats, dried fruit and coconut oil. We named and tried all the ingredients, used plastic knives and scissors to cut dates and apricots and took turns adding all the ingredients into the blender. We were so excited to watch all the ingredients mix together. At the end rolled the mixture into small balls, using our hands.
During Literacy Focus Time we talked about why it is important to be active and discussed what activities the children like to do. Most of the children spoke about swimming, scootering and playing ball games. They also completed an activity sheet where they stuck photos of their favourite activities.
In the Outdoor Learning Environment the children practiced going through an obstacle course in preparation for Sports Day. They practiced going up the climbing frame and going down the slide safely, had fun riding cars and tricycles, they explored water and large pipettes and looked at their favourite books on the picnic blanket.
In Art we embraced the children’s love of painting by setting up a collaborative art project where they used sponges, brushes and foam blocks and paint to make boards for Sports Day.
We are looking forward to another busy week next week at 345 Wandsworth!
