The Chicks had a very busy week back after the Half Term break. We have embraced the British Values of Respect and Tolerance, as we learnt about Diwali and the traditions around this celebration supported by our Topic Story ‘Light a Lamp’ by Johnny Zucker.
We discussed that Diwali is the festival of light and the children made divas from air dry clay which were painted and decorated. With this activity the children focused on building strength in their hand muscles as they modelled and flattened the clay. Following this, during our Outdoor Learning Walk we followed a path of candles and we talked about the Diwali story and how the people used the diva lights to guide Rama and Sita's way back home.
The Chicks also had the opportunity to experiment with decorating hand templates using loose parts and chalk as well as painting rangoli patterns with chalk, pens and paint which the children loved. One of the most popular activities this week has been building mosaics using the hexagon tiles so during our Maths Focus Time the children concentrated on creating a two-step pattern.
The Chicks enjoyed participating in our sensory session where they used their sense of smell to smell the different aromas of each spice. During this activity the children learnt the name of spices such as garam masala and cumin and how the use of spices adds extra flavour to our meals.
At the end of the week the Chicks discussed Remembrance Day and talked about what the Poppy symbolises. Some of the children have noticed that family members are wearing a poppy and made a painting of a poppy using corks to print with. Finally during our Weekend News the Chicks spoke about seeing fireworks with their families so they had the opportunity to recreate them at our Art table using cardboard tubes and colourful paint.
