The Fledglings classroom has been a hive of activity this week as we have celebrated the Lunar New Year. Our Topic Story Our Lunar New Year by Yobe Qiu has given us insight into how the New Year is celebrated differently in places around the world including in China, South Korea and Vietnam. The children have loved this topic and have been fascinated with the different ways people celebrate. They have also had wonderful group discussions, relating the New Year celebrations to their real life experiences of things they do with their families. They worked together to create a dragon in our Art project and were enthralled by the dragon dances we watched.
The Lunar New Year also provided inspiration for our Focus Lessons where we counted lucky coins in Maths and worked out the initial sounds for the different animals from the zodiac calendar in our Literacy activity. The children were thrilled to work out which year their birthdays fell under!
We resumed our Outdoor Learning Days with enthusiasm despite the chilly weather and our frozen nature collection activity was tremendously popular. The Fledglings were given the challenge of collecting a selection of different natural items from the environment around us. Frosty leaves were by far the most popular item and to extend our learning we decided to put all our objects in small glass containers which we then filled with water and left in our Outdoor Learning Environment overnight to see if they would freeze. They were fascinated to see that some had frozen completely and others only a little bit or not at all.
The Fledglings have loved the changes we have made to the classroom and the Creation Station and larger Role Play area have remained busy throughout the week.
We are sending warm wishes for a happy Lunar New Year from the Fledglings!
